Digital Photography
Jennifer
Chin
In this course you will learn how to affectively capture and manipulate digital photos to achieve imaginative and artistically compelling images. Through in-class exercises students will learn basic photographic skills such as framing, lighting, composition, image manipulation, and alternative and experimental capture techniques. Class exercises will be accompanied by weekly assignments and occasional field trips in which students will learn to practically employ the techniques and concepts learned in class. Basic image manipulation, formatting and editing will also be covered and students will have the opportunity to print their best pieces from each assignment.
Please note: Students are required to provide their own digital camera, which must be capable of shooting in manual mode. Students with a laptop computer with photo editing software are encouraged to bring their equipment to class, to further the learning process. The class requires students to have the following:
- Camera – Digital SLR or Point and Shoot with Manual control.
- Tripod – full sized tripods are ideal but a small tripod that can be mounted to a table or chair may be sufficient.
- Notebook – there will be quite a bit of information to remember and a small notebook and pencil, which you can keep in your camera bag, will definitely come in handy.
In tandem with our in-class exercises, you will be expected to complete a series of weekly field assignments that we will review in the following session. These assignments are designed to allow you to exercise the various concepts learned in the class in "real world" situations. Through class review we can work together to workshop the questions and challenges you experienced during the assignment as well as celebrate your achievements. You can expect to spend a minimum of 1-2 hours per week on these assignments. No previous photographic experience is necessary although a basic knowledge of your digital camera and a working knowledge of computer operation would be helpful. Students who wish to explore this course for more than one term will be accommodated with appropriate challenges to meet their skill level.
