Discounts
Students who register in the fall for a minimum of one class in each of the fall, winter & spring terms will be entitled to a 5% discount off one winter & one spring class. ARAS Members in good standing receive an additional discount. Get the details.
Payment Plans
Payment plans can be arranged for those registering for more than one term or for those registering more than one family member in one term. Material lists will be available for download in PDF
format at least two weeks prior to the start of class. The School reserves
the right to cancel any class with insufficient enrollment up to one week
prior to the published start date; we are not responsible for purchased art
supplies.

Watercolour Painting I

This course is designed for students who wish to learn the basics of watercolour painting, and also for those who wish to further develop their level of skill and knowledge with this medium. Students will learn colour mixing and theory, the use of watercolour brushes and how to paint with the transparency of watercolours. Participants will also explore various techniques such as how to make washes, painting wet-into-wet and resist processes. The course also covers the fundamentals of composition and perspective and students will work with a variety of subject matter including still life, landscape, portraits and subjects of their own choice. Drawing skills can vary. This course also offers students the opportunity to study watercolour beyond the basic level if they wish to continue during successive terms.

Watercolour Painting From Photographs for Beginners

If you are serious about developing your skill and technique and want professional results, then this course is for you. Learn how to work from well-taken photographs, to paint lively, expressive and believable images by going beyond the flatness of 2-D. This course is designed for novices or those who would like a refresher in watercolour painting. Composition, colour theory and mixing, and how they apply to watercolour techniques will be emphasized through exercises and execution of complete works of art.
Please note: For the Fall Term, this class begins Tuesday, September 29, 2009 and ends Tuesday December 22, 2009.

Watercolour Painting From Photographs

If you are serious about taking your watercolour painting skills to the next level and want professional results, then this course is for you. Develop your own body of paintings, working from well-taken photographs. You will paint lively, expressive and believable images by going beyond the flatness of 2-D. Some painting experience is required. Advanced composition, colour theory and watercolour painting techniques for trouble shooting will be emphasized through exercises and execution of complete works of art.

Painting the Figure & Portrait with Watercolour

This course is designed for students with previous watercolour painting experience and who wish to incorporate the figure and portrait into their work. Students will begin the course working from 2 dimensional references, however, the majority of the term they will be working from a live model. The class will produce both short and long-term studies that include portraits, and clothed, and unclothed figure paintings. Lessons will cover the elements of design, including light, value, shape, colour mixing; proportion, balance, structure and also the inclusion of emotion and mood. This course will facilitate the students' understanding of portrait and figure painting and introduce them to various approaches to the watercolour process as it relates to this subject matter.

Watercolour Painting II

This course is intended for students with strong previous experience and who wish to continue watercolour painting at an advanced level. Students will be able to expand their painting skills by learning new techniques and working within a project-based program. Varied subject matter and themes will be explored including painting from the imagination, self-directed projects, multi-media works, and very large paintings.
