Approaches to Painting
Michael Antkowiak • Andrew Judd
This course is designed for students who wish to see a progression in their learning. To that end, the three terms will build successively on each other. It is therefore recommended that students attend all three terms to gain optimal understanding of this approach to painting.
Term I
An overview of the fundamentals of painting will be covered in this term. Focusing on drawing and painting, the class will learn to create light and shadow using a limited colour palette. Students will learn to control the elements of painting and create strong compositions in order to maximize their expression with the medium. The subject of study will be still life or landscape.

Term II
This term will focus on developing a basic understanding of the human form. The term will be divided between 1) quick, sketches in charcoal and paint from the live model, and 2) painting details and creating more comprehensive images from the model. Building on the experience of the first term, students will further their paint handling ability and learn about the blending of edges and how to use colour and value to create the illusion of form.
Model fee included, material list provided
Term III
Creating a finished work of art can be challenging. This term combines the information covered in the first two terms and looks at how to successfully start and finish a painting. Students will begin with a preliminary sketch, choose a composition and make a value and a colour study of their subject. From their studies, they will put it all together to create a well-executed finished work of art. The subject of study will vary according to individual interests.
