Discounts

Students who register in the fall for a minimum of one class in each of the fall, winter & spring terms will be entitled to a 5% discount off one winter & one spring class. ARAS Members in good standing receive an additional discount. Get the details.

Payment Plans

Payment plans can be arranged for those registering for more than one term or for those registering more than one family member in one term. Payment plans must be made through the office with post-dated cheques or pre-authorized credit card payments. Some restrictions apply. Please contact 416-961-1502, ext. 303 or email us for details.

Materials

Prices include applicable taxes and materials, unless "materials list provided" or "download material list" is indicated.

Material lists will be available for download in PDF format at least two weeks prior to the start of class. The School reserves the right to cancel any class with insufficient enrollment up to one week prior to the published start date; we are not responsible for purchased art supplies.

Painting for Beginners

Jennifer Hinrichs

This is an introductory course in painting, suitable for the novice painter or as a refresher for those who have not painted for some time. The class will focus on the fundamentals of colour theory, composition, perspective, paint handling and application, while developing one's own creative and perceptual skills. With plenty of guidance and individual attention, students will paint from still life and photo references. Students will paint with acrylics.

Drawing & Painting Essentials

Martha Johnson

Working with both dry and wet media, students in this class will create drawings that are designed to assist in the transition into the painting process. This course is suitable for beginners who wish to try painting and need to acquire the drawing skills required to facilitate the painting process, and for more experienced students who want to refine their drawing technique as it relates to crafting a successful painting. Students can choose to follow the week-to-week projects, which provide formal structure, or they can apply the lessons to more self directed paintings and drawings that they create in class, under the guidance of a professional. Special attention will be given to the development of the artist's personal style.

Drawing & Painting

This course offers a comprehensive overview of drawing and painting techniques. Beginners and those with more experience are all welcome, as students can build upon their skills and hone their technique each term. Working from still life, photographs, a model, images from art history and/or independent themes and ideas, students will be introduced to specific drawing and painting fundamentals and techniques. These include line drawing, value, shape, pattern, texture, shading, highlighting, colour and perspective. While experimenting with an exciting variety of artist's tools, media and techniques, students will learn to explore and develop their own personal style.

Acrylic Painting Studio

This program will focus on the fundamentals of colour theory, the study of light and shadow, composition, visual perspective, paint handling and application, while developing one's own creative and perceptual skills. Students are encouraged to study for more than one term as a varied subject matter will be dealt with each session. Suitable for beginners or as a "refresher" for those who have not painted recently or those who would just like a supportive environment to further develop their painting skills, the program will offer plenty of guidance and individual attention. Students will feel ready to explore the next step in painting.

Experimental Acrylics

This course is a painting adventure designed for those who would like to discover the different applications of acrylics, including fluid acrylics and the exciting effects created by combining them with various mixed media, such as gels, collage and a variety of texturing materials and tools. Different painting styles will be explored according to subject matter, ranging from still life, landscape and photo references, as well as non-representational compositions.

Figure Studies

Michael Antkowiak

This class will explore the uniquely expressive effects of combining water based and drawing media, such as pen and ink wash, watercolours, acrylic paint with charcoal and pastels. Learn to trust your intuition and develop a confident and dynamic line through a number of drawing exercises and sustained drawings from the human form. Lessons will explore line quality, colour theory, value and shading, and the handling of materials. Students will also have the opportunity to work from both life and photography and consider ideas of composition, scale, space and how the figure relates to its environment.

Landscape Painting

Abstract Acrylic Painting

Lydia Panart

This is an inspiring, process-oriented course for those who are willing to delve into the creative journey towards abstract painting. Students will be encouraged to explore language, foster emotional richness, spontaneity and experimentation and to develop conceptual ideas. Helpful visual information on modern art will be provided with an emphasis on composition, balance, colour, form and symbolism, the representation of motion and the superimposition of images in the organization of space. Both one-on-one and group critiques are aimed at enhancing individual growth. Media will mainly include acrylics and liquid acrylics. Collage and various media or materials of the student's choice can be introduced to experiment with different techniques.

Intermediate Acrylic Painting

This course will address the needs of students with some previous acrylic painting experience, as well as those wishing to renew an interest in the medium. Specific lessons will be provided in colour mixing, brushwork, and composition. Participants may choose to work from still life or photos and time will also be given to produce work of their own design. The class will be tailored to fit the individual levels of students in a creative and positive environment.

Contemporary Acrylic Painting

This studio course is designed for students who have taken their painting skills to an advanced level and now wish to develop a body of work with the goal of exhibiting in a gallery. Each term a number of paintings will be completed with emphasis on the pace and finishing skills required to develop an art piece. Students will look at how to successfully compose, build and finish a painting.

In the fall term, students will deal with varied subject matter including still life, the human figure, landscape and nature. In the winter session the class will mainly explore the figure and portrait. The spring term class will focus on landscapes and nature. Students will work from life as well as photo references.

Those wishing to work on independent projects will also be accommodated. For each painting, time will be spent setting up the subject matter and developing an individualized approach to the work, addressing the artistic direction that the student is moving towards. Much individual attention will be given to each student.

Students will learn problem-solving techniques for painting issues that arise through the study of composition, perspective, fore/mid/background, colour mixing, contrast and sense of depth. Time will be spent on positive and supportive group critique.

Acrylic Painting: Independent Studies

This class will help students further define and develop their own personal painting style under the guidance of a professional artist. Through lessons geared at refining perceptual skills, paint application and advanced colour comprehension, as well as integrating and layering images and multiple canvases, students will begin to create a body of work based on their own interests and subject matter-still life, photos and existing images. This course is suitable for those with previous acrylic painting experience.
