Discounts
Students who register in the fall for a minimum of one class in each of the fall, winter & spring terms will be entitled to a 5% discount off one winter & one spring class. ARAS Members in good standing receive an additional discount. Get the details.
Payment Plans
Payment plans can be arranged for those registering for more than one term or for those registering more than one family member in one term. Material lists will be available for download in PDF
format at least two weeks prior to the start of class. The School reserves
the right to cancel any class with insufficient enrollment up to one week
prior to the published start date; we are not responsible for purchased art
supplies.

Youth Studio: Creating a Portfolio of Work (Gr. 8-12)

This advanced studio course is intended for young artists interested in building a cohesive portfolio of work while developing their repertoire of art-making techniques. Through a series of hands-on projects, students will gain experience and technical proficiency in a wide variety of media. Techniques covered in this course include drawing and painting from observation, sculptural modeling and sketchbook and concept development. Studio work will be supplemented with discussions and critiques to allow students to develop a language through which they can exercise observation, research and critical thinking skills. For college, university and art school applicants, portfolios will be reviewed and prepared with the guidance of the instructor. Interview and presentation techniques will also be discussed.

Developing Your Creativity

Come and break through the blocks that may be inhibiting your use of creativity in your work. This program will help students believe in and develop their own creative process through a unique series of exercises in drawing and painting. This class is perfect for anyone interested and curious about the creative process and how it can help in your work and in your life. Students are encouraged to participate in more than one term as each session will present a different set of exercises and challenges. Students work at their own pace and no previous experience is necessary.

Principles of Design in Creating Art

This course is designed to develop one's own artistic work using the elements and principles of design as the main impetus for learning. Using a variety of concepts such as brainstorming, creative problem solving and discussion, students will enhance their creativity and art making skills, exploring both 2- and 3-dimensional drawing and painting projects. Many techniques and media will be employed including graphite, conté, chalk, pastel, ink, acrylic, collage and 3-D modeling. Using these materials, students will gain a better understanding of the application of colour, contrast, notions of perspective, manipulation of space, expression of movement and transformation in a variety of subject matter. This course is suitable for those with some previous drawing and painting experience.
