Comic Book Illustration

In this program, students will explore graphic storytelling, while developing the fundamental elements needed to design and create interesting and powerful comic book illustrations. While looking at the history of the comic book, as well as its future direction, the class will focus on creating original and stylistic pieces, sometimes pushing the boundaries of what can be created through this art form. While incorporating a variety of media, tools and styles, students will focus on composition, colour, media application, visual expression and the formation of ideas to create fully rendered comic books.
This class will prepare students to have portfolio ready pieces that will represent their work to its fullest potential.

This program is designed for beginners, as well as those who wish to improve their drawing skills and refine their understanding of visual language. Using pencils, conté, charcoal and pastels, fundamental techniques such as line weights, shading and highlighting will be explored. Students will develop their drawing skills and become confident with the tools of visual expression.

Drawing in Colour

Pastels are one of the most immediate and satisfying mediums to work in. They can produce intense, vivid colours or soft and subtle shades and were used by many famous artists including Renoir and Degas. A great introduction to colour, for people who are contemplating a painting course, this program is guaranteed to take your drawing abilities to the next level. Soft chalk pastel, in both stick and pencil form, is a dry medium that combines the best qualities of drawing and painting. It is an expressive medium, which will allow for a more satisfying drawing experience. Working from photos and still life, students will develop their understanding of colour theory, harmony and composition.

In this course, for students with some previous drawing experience, participants will learn to create with more confidence. Working from the human figure and from other sources and subject matter, the class will explore both drawing for its own sake, or as a first step toward painting. Subjects covered include line as contour, positive forms and negative shapes, light and shadow, perspective, proportion, and how they affect composition.

Portrait and Figure Drawing

Designed for students who would like to explore the human figure indepth, this class will delve into the many subtle details of working with this subject matter. Students will depict the human figure in the context of its surrounding space and will address some of the issues related to drawing this complex form. Contour, line, shading, highlighting, proportions and capturing the individual's character will be some of the topics dealt with in this studio class. This course is suitable for both beginners and those who have had some experience with drawing.

Master Class in Portraiture

This structured curriculum responds to the increasing desire of serious artists to acquire the skills to be able to paint the portrait from life. Precise consideration will be given to accurate drawing and the effects of light on form. Working on a single piece throughout the term, you will cultivate an ability to challenge yourself, problem-solve and self-correct. Instruction will be in the form of intensive, daily demonstrations and individual critique. Using traditional ideas and techniques, you will create a personal expression through technical excellence. The only prerequisites are self-motivation, a passion to learn, and desire to be pushed to very high levels. You will perceive more deeply, think more clearly, and create more skillfully with your own hands, in this field where skills count! This is an ARC-approved Atelier course.
