Intro to Portrait & Figure Drawing
John
Viljoen
This course offers a rare opportunity for beginners, serious students and emerging artists to study drawing of the human face and form accurately and expressively. Students will be introduced to a contemporary-classical vocabulary, and will examine the visual and natural design concepts that define portraiture and figure drawing - likeness and character. The objectives are accuracy, to capture the rhythmic action of the pose, and to make an insightful study of the model's character. Teaching will consist of lecture/ demonstrations on the complex actions of light, the organic design and features of the head, neck and shoulders, understanding the gesture, separating the shadow from the light, and then concentrating on understanding and rendering the human form. Group demonstrations, and one-on-one critique at the easel will assist in the learning process. With the options of concentrating on a bust portrait or taking on the full-figure, students will work on a single, sustained picture throughout the term. A proven, logical and sequential approach, the only pre-requisites are an open mind and a willingness to be pushed to a higher level.
